What IS Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (or ILL, for short) is a service that allows SUNY Broome patrons to request books and articles from other libraries.  There is typically no cost for this service.   More information can be found on the library website - Interlibrary Loan page.

Interlibrary Loan Service at the Circulation Desk

  1. Interlibrary loan books are on the shelves behind the circulation desk, and are labeled with the patron's name.
  2. Find the appropriate book(s).
  3. Open the ILLiad Client.  This is an icon on the desktop of the circulation computers.  The password is written on a card by the monitor.
    1. If you are asked to update the Client, click NO.  The program should work using the currently installed version - if there are any issues, talk to the Access Services Librarian or the Resource Sharing Librarian.
  4. When the Client opens, click on the "Borrowing" tab in the very top blue section of the screen.
  5. Click on the "Check Out" button from the Circulation options.

  6. On the next screen, scan the barcode on the interlibrary loan label.  In this program, you do NOT scan the patron's ID!  The interlibrary loan software assumes that the person who requested the book is the person who gets it, so it is up to YOU to ensure that the correct person is getting the item.
  7. Once you have scanned all the items, click the "Process Queue" button in the top menu bar.  You will know this was successful when "Checked Out to Customer" appears in the item's status field.
  8. The system will show a due date, set by the library that sent the book (not us!).  You can tell the patron to contact the interlibrary loan office if they need to renew the book.
  9. When an interlibrary loan book is returned, do NOT scan it.  Just put it on the shelf labeled "interlibrary loan returns" behind the circulation desk.   The Resource Sharing Librarian will take care of these.
