Digital Literacy Workshops

guide to support digital literacy workshops for EOP Summer session

Google/Library comparison - key points

  1. Internet searches yield primarily commercial information, library focuses on research and information
    1. Google’s main business (where they make their money) is advertising, and most web pages have a commercial purpose.
    2. Academic libraries collect information specifically for research and learning
  2. Types of information - not everything on the web is a web page
    1. Web information can be categorized by formats and genres, eg videos, ads, etc
    2. Web information can also be categorized by purpose - informational, educational, commercial, persuasive, etc. Note that these categories are not necessarily distinct
  3. You can find good information through Google. You may have to sift through commercial and clickbait material
  4. Information from the library can be highly technical, and difficult to read, but students are expected to use this type of material

For next time

Read through Sifting Through the Coronavirus Pandemic. This should take about an hour. There is some very useful information in the site. Make note of the techniques that are demonstrated. Think of an example or two of news or stories, not necessarily about coronavirus, where you might apply this process. We will be talking about it next time.
