What is a secondary source in psychology?

  • Secondary sources in psychology include articles that summarize or provide interpretations of original research.
  • Secondary sources can be articles or books.
  • Review articles are also considered a secondary source.
  • Secondary sources can often be easier to read.

Books - print and electronic

The SUNY Broome library has an extensive collection of book, both print and electronic.  Both formats can serve as secondary sources, as they are often the product of researchers' study of other primary sources!  A well-constructed academic book can also lead you to those primary sources, as the authors should provide extensive citations.

When it comes to doing research, electronic books can offer some advantages - especially when reading the entire book from cover to cover isn't your goal.  Most ebooks in the SUNY Broome library catalog are viewable as pdf documents, which will look exactly as they would in print.  Additionally, there is a "Search within" feature that allows you to quickly locate search terms and phrases.
